Some players really like to build monstrous stations and/or fleets. But you have to deal with the eventual lack of challenges, which comes quicker for you than non-powergamers, but will eventually come no matter how many restrictions you put on the game. What you do is called 'powergaming' and if that's the way you like to play, that's fine. But in no way can that be considered 'roleplaying'. Crystal gathering was one such early restriction, since it made the game so much easier to start. I almost always impose restrictions on myself as a way of increasing the challenge as I get to know the game better and it consequently becomes easier. I think you're confusing 'roleplaying' with 'self-imposed restrictions'. The main reason to limiting player assets is indeed to make game more challenging. I cannot do the same in X4 cause slapping high preset and spamming cap ships does the trick. I have spent hundreds of hours in this game tinkering with ship builds and ship types to find the one that works vs end game enemies. By design you cannot brute force your way by bringing an armada of capital ships but instead have to work with limited capacities, think on which ships have synergies, on fleet composition, on ship positioning in battle, and equipment to use. You can own as many ships as you like but your fleet size is limited as well as the deployment points for the battle. Starsector is good example of asset limits. Given the option most people would choose the easy solution of building 10000 Asgards and steamrolling the universe rather than thinking about fleet composition and tactics. Now players have to scout for dense regions, protect miners, and think on resource supply chains rather than assign hundreds of miners to a station and forgetting about it. Resource density change is a good example. Roleplayers need to understand that balance and restrictions are the THINK part of the game. Which is a bit sad as I really like the aesthetics of Behemoth, but it is simply outperformed by ships from DLCs. If I can build the most powerful destroyer, like Syn, in the game I will not invest any resources in other ships. If I can mix terran shields with split engines to get the best equipment on my fighters I will do it. If I can earn millions by abusing capturing of terran build ship without losing rep I will do it. If there is an option that is superior to anything else I cannot justify a reason not to use it. I am not a roleplayer like GCU Grey Area. This is the most relevant comment in this discussion. Any of those sound familiar?Ī mechanic isn't a limitation because it requires the player to exercise choice or tactics. That's why we also see other threads pop up now and again like: "Changes to the economy just slow down the game" "player choice does not matter because the universe runs itself" "Xenon get wiped out too early and pose no threat (currently one on the front page now)". They are trying to extend the time it takes to get to your goal (mining changes, economy changes). This also explains changes that egosoft is making to the game. No matter how many "limitations" you set for yourself, you are not solving the main problem that the game lacks challenge. Time is the thing that wins in this game, not player skill or choice. With enough time, the player will reach their goals. My opinion: If we define "victory" for this game as "player reaching their goals", the game is not challenging. The trouble is that it's hard to flesh out an idea for more challenge without making it sound like a limitation.Ĭoming together here, ask: "How can the devs create a more challenging game without imposing limitations on the player?" Once we re-frame the question we'll have a more productive discussion. When one side presents these ideas, the meaning behind what they are saying is they want more challenge to their game. It seems like the word "limitation" has become synonymous with "challenge". I respect both sides of the argument here, but every time this comes up I feel like we're having two different conversations. I can limit myself to create more challenging situations. Theae discussuions come up every 6 momths or so, someone who can't impose limitations on themself wants to now impose limits on others.
